The department, planned as a solid construction, spreads over a floor plan of approx. 50 x 79 m and is up to 75 % with basement. In the institute area, the three above ground floors are grouped with lecture halls, seminar rooms, laboratories, and office rooms around a glazed inner courtyard. The associated sports hall has a clearance height of approx. 12 m and is connected to the institute building at basement level. It takes up a good 1/3 of the entire footprint. A special design characteristic of the building is the external facade of glass and structrual floor to ceiling concrete shear walls.

DSGB UNIVERSITY OF BASEL
NEW CONSTRUCTION OF DEPARTMENT FOR SPORT, EXERCISE AND HEALTH
With the new construction of the Department for Sport, Exercise, and Health, the University of Basel is reacting to the increasing number of students and the corresponding requirement for more space. Furthermore, the department’s rooms, which up to now have been spread over several locations, can be brought together on one site. The draft, which is the result of an architectural competition, describes a four-storey institutional building with a directly connected double sports hall in which about 100 employees and 550 students of the DSGB will find space.
