The rhombic roof structure of 104cm high glued-laminated timber (glulam) supports is constructed as a bi-directional load bearing grid which was erected completely without temporary props on site. The stage wing was built using reinforced concrete and serves as a bracing element for the 6m high building. The area around Neckartailfingen is situated in a seismically very active region in southern Germany. The selected timber construction with its ductile joint connections can react non-problematically to earthquakes.

FESTIVAL HALL NECKARTAILFINGEN
THE FLOATING ROOF ON THE RIVER NECKAR
A new festival hall was built in Neckartailfingen on the banks of the River Neckar. The conceptual design of the building paid a great deal of attention to the creation of a tangible relationship between the hall and the surrounding park and town common. This was achieved by designing the event location to be open on three sides. To emphasise the illusion of a free-floating roof, it cantilevers up to 6 meters freely above the entrance facade of the hall measuring 31 x 32m. The roof is supported by extremely slender, but highly resilient nevertheless, composite columns made of circular hollow sections that have been filled with concrete, positioned directly within the glass facade.
The rhombic wooden roof structure is the distinctive characteristic of the festival hall. It was designed and detailed in close collaboration with the structural support planners.
