The use of bonded steel plates facilitated a cost-efficient renovation and preservation of the existing auditorium. The greatest challenge was the integration of the new two-storey choir and orchestra rehearsal room whilst simultaneously maintaining complete acoustic decoupling.

THEATER HEIDELBERG
NEW CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION OF THE THEATRE AND PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The architect’s design integrated the former theatre building in the new construction, whereby prior to starting the actual building measures the non-listed parts of the existing building were demolished. The new auditorium, the existing auditorium of the old theatre, the tuning room and the choir and orchestra rehearsal room, and the engineering room, storage, and rehearsal stage are arranged around the newly built central stage tower. The re-modelling of the historic theatre auditorium and the connection to the new building were extremely complex structural engineering tasks with regard to the construction work. The project required detailed planning of the static concept as well as strict supervision of the building sequence.
Heidelberg has set a distinctive example for the German theatre landscape with this impressive re-modelling and new construction (…).
