Despite the marginal construction height of 46.5 cm, the entire building services could be integrated in the ceilings. The ceiling’s steel girders span the entire width of the floor so that there was no need for interior columns. Therefore, high flexibility with the floor plan configuration was made possible. The skyscraper is braced by four reinforced concrete cores which lie in the connecting area of the two towers. The cores are held in place in the four storey basement and in the foundation slab, which was constructed as a combined pile-slab foundation.

WESTEND DUO
FOLDED CEILINGS FOR A SKYSCRAPER
The 26 storey office skyscraper is located in Frankfurt Westend, just a stone’s throw from the financial district. The building consists of two interconnected towers which are arranged slightly skewed towards each other. An innovative ceiling system comprised of prefabricated steel girders and a 15cm-thick folded reinforced concrete slab facilitated the implementation of an additional storey within the maximum building height of 96 meters. This would not have been possible using a conventional ceiling system.
This project received a special prize for sustainability because it (…) is characterized by an extraordinary innovative approach and can therefore be regarded as exemplary for the future development in skyscraper construction.
